How to Hide Chats on Instagram
To hide a chat on Instagram, swipe left on the conversation in your inbox and tap Hide chat. The conversation moves into a Locked chats folder that only you can open, and its contents stop appearing in notifications and search. You will need device authentication — a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock — set up before the feature will work.
That is the whole answer, and it is worth stating plainly because most articles on this subject describe a feature Instagram does not have.
Instagram does not have a DM archive
If you have been searching for how to archive Instagram messages, stop. There is no messages archive.
Instagram’s Archive covers three things: Stories, Posts, and Live videos. That is what you reach through the Archive option on your profile, and Instagram’s own help documentation lists exactly those three. There has never been a fourth option for direct messages.
A surprising number of pages ranking for this query walk you through “archiving a chat,” complete with numbered steps. Those steps describe a menu that does not exist. If you followed one and could not find the option, nothing is wrong with your app.
What Instagram gives you instead is better named and easier to find: locked chats. The gesture is literally labeled “Hide chat,” which is presumably what you were looking for in the first place.
What locked chats actually do
Instagram’s description is precise: when you lock a chat, it moves to a folder only you can see in your inbox, and the message content is hidden from notifications and search.
Three things follow from that, and they matter.
Notifications go quiet in a specific way. The content is hidden rather than suppressed entirely. This is the difference between locking and muting — muting stops the alert, locking stops the preview text from appearing where someone glancing at your phone could read it.
Search stops surfacing it. Messages in a locked chat do not appear when you search your inbox. For most people this is the real value of the feature.
It is one-sided. Instagram is explicit: the chat is not locked for anyone else in the conversation. The other person sees an ordinary chat in an ordinary inbox. Locking protects a conversation from someone looking at your phone. It does nothing about theirs.
How to lock and hide a chat: step by step
Before you start: you need device authentication enabled — a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock. Instagram requires it, because it is what protects the folder.
Method 1 — the quick way, from your inbox
- Tap Messages.
- Swipe left on the conversation.
- Tap Hide chat.
Method 2 — from inside the chat
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the conversation you want to hide.
- Tap the chat name at the top.
- Tap Privacy & safety.
- Toggle on Lock and hide chat.
- Complete device authentication.
How to find your locked chats again
This is the step people get stuck on, because the folder is not where you would expect.
- Tap Messages.
- Swipe down from the top of your inbox.
- Tap Locked chats.
- Authenticate with your face, fingerprint, or passcode.
The pull-down gesture is the part nobody guesses. There is no visible button.
One caveat worth knowing before you rely on it: if you delete a locked chat and later start a new conversation with the same person, that new chat will not be locked. The setting does not follow the contact.
A note on availability. Instagram documents this feature without stating any regional or version limits, so it should be broadly available — but availability is not formally guaranteed everywhere. If the option is missing, update the app first.
Other ways to hide a conversation, and what each actually does
Locked chats are the right answer for most people. These are the alternatives, with an honest account of what they do, because several are widely misdescribed.

Mute a chat
Messages → tap the conversation → tap their name at the top → Mute → toggle Mute messages or Mute calls.
For a group chat: Messages → the group → the group name → Mute → then choose Mute messages, Mute @mentions, or Mute calls.
Muting is about peace, not privacy. Anyone opening your inbox still sees the conversation sitting there.
Delete a chat
Messages → press and hold the conversation → Delete → Delete to confirm.
Two things to understand. It only deletes for you — Instagram states the conversation still appears in the inbox of everyone else in it. And deleted messages are not included in a Data Download of your account, so this is not a route to keeping a private copy.
Delete individual messages
Messages → open the chat → press and hold a message → Delete for you.
Useful for tidying rather than hiding. Note Instagram’s caveat: if the chat or a nearby message is reported, deleted messages may be included in that report.
Restrict someone
Messages → the chat → their name → Options → Restrict → Restrict.
Restricting moves their messages out of your main inbox into Message Requests and lets you read them without sending a read receipt. They are not notified. It changes where the conversation lives rather than concealing it, but if your goal is for a specific person’s messages to stop appearing in your main inbox, this does the job.
Keep strangers out of your inbox entirely
Profile → Menu → under How others can interact with you → Messages and story replies → Message requests. You can also set who may send you group message requests — everyone, or only people you follow.
Instagram also maintains a spam folder: Messages → Requests → Spam.
Vanish mode and disappearing messages
Vanish mode: open a chat and swipe up to turn it on, swipe up again to turn it off. Content disappears when someone leaves the chat or the mode is switched off.
Three caveats. Instagram states the feature may be unavailable in Japan and in countries located in Europe — so check before relying on it. You are notified if Instagram detects the other person taking a screenshot. And some professional accounts cannot receive vanish mode messages.
Disappearing messages is a separate feature, also reached by swiping up, with a Change timer control. It is only available in certain locations.
Neither is a hiding tool. They control how long a message survives, not who can see the conversation exists.
Important: Instagram ended encrypted messaging in May 2026
If you came here after reading advice about using Instagram’s encrypted or secret chats for privacy, that advice is out of date.
End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram is no longer supported as of 8 May 2026. Instagram’s own documentation confirms it, and points users who want encrypted messaging to WhatsApp instead. Affected chats were given instructions for downloading media and messages worth keeping.
Two clarifications while we are here. “Secret conversations” was always a Facebook Messenger term — Instagram never had a feature by that name. And locked chats are not encryption. They control who can open a conversation on your device; they say nothing about how the messages travel.
Which method should you use?
- Someone might pick up your phone. Lock the chat. This is exactly what the feature is for.
- The notifications are the problem. Mute it.
- You want it out of your main inbox permanently. Restrict the person, or delete the chat — remembering deletion is one-sided.
- You want the other person to have no copy. Not possible. Nothing Instagram offers removes a conversation from someone else’s inbox. Any tool claiming otherwise is misrepresenting what it does.
- You want genuinely private messaging. Use a platform built for it. Since May 2026, Instagram is no longer that platform.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram have archived messages? No. Instagram’s Archive covers Stories, Posts, and Live videos only. There has never been a DM archive. The feature you want is locked chats, reached by swiping left on a conversation and tapping Hide chat.
Where are locked chats on Instagram? Open Messages, then swipe down from the top of your inbox and tap Locked chats. You will need to authenticate. The pull-down gesture is not signposted, which is why it is hard to find.
How do I hide an Instagram chat without deleting it? Swipe left on the conversation and tap Hide chat, or open the chat, tap the name at the top, go to Privacy & safety, and toggle Lock and hide chat. The conversation is preserved in full — just moved somewhere private.
Can the other person tell I hid our chat? No. Locking is one-sided and generates no notification. Instagram confirms the chat is not locked for others in the conversation — on their side, nothing changes at all.
Does hiding a chat delete the messages? No. Locking moves a conversation to a private folder and leaves everything in it intact. You can open it any time by authenticating.
Can I hide Instagram chats on desktop? Locked chats are documented as a mobile feature, set up with device authentication. Muting and deleting work on desktop. If you need a conversation hidden, do it from your phone.
What happens if I delete a locked chat? It is removed from your side. If you later start a new conversation with the same person, that new chat will not be locked — you would need to lock it again.
Can I lock a group chat? Instagram’s documentation describes locking chats without excluding groups, and the inbox swipe gesture behaves consistently. Muting a group is separately documented with its own options for messages, mentions, and calls.
Why can’t I see the Hide chat option? Most likely you have not set up device authentication, which Instagram requires for this feature. Check that a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock is enabled on your phone, then update Instagram to the latest version.
