When someone searches “digital marketing agency near me” or “dentist in Indiranagar”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any normal result. That map pack gets a large share of the clicks — and most businesses never optimise for it.
Here is the checklist we use with clients to win local search, in the order we do it.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Business Profile is the single biggest local ranking factor. Fill in every field:
- Primary category: choose the most specific one that matches what you sell (for example “Dental clinic”, not “Health”).
- Secondary categories: add the services you genuinely offer.
- Service area and hours: including holiday hours.
- Products and services: with short descriptions and prices where possible.
- Photos: real photos of your team, office and work — at least 10 to start.
2. Make your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP means Name, Address and Phone number. It must be written identically on your website, Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook and every other directory. Small differences (“Rd” vs “Road”, an old phone number) weaken Google’s confidence in your listing.
3. Build a review engine
Reviews influence both rankings and conversions. Do not wait for them to arrive:
- Create a short review link from your Business Profile.
- Send it by WhatsApp or SMS within 24 hours of a completed job.
- Reply to every review — positive and negative — within two days.
A steady flow of fresh reviews beats a large number of old ones. Aim for a few new reviews every week, not a burst once a year.
4. Create a page for every location and service
If you serve Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, each city deserves its own page with a unique introduction, local testimonials, an embedded map and directions. Avoid copying the same text and swapping the city name — Google treats that as thin content.
5. Add LocalBusiness schema
Structured data tells search engines exactly who you are and where you operate. Add LocalBusiness (or a more specific type such as Dentist) schema with your address, geo-coordinates, opening hours and same-as links to your social profiles.
6. Post weekly on your Business Profile
Offers, events and updates keep your listing active and give searchers a reason to click. Repurpose your blog and social content — it takes ten minutes a week.
7. Track calls, directions and bookings
Local SEO success is measured in enquiries, not rankings. Use UTM parameters on your Business Profile website link, track calls from the listing, and review the Performance tab every month.
