Cold email still works in B2B — when it is targeted, relevant and technically sound. Most campaigns fail not because of the copy but because of bad lists and poor deliverability. Here is the playbook we use.
1. Define a tight ICP
Your Ideal Customer Profile should be specific enough to filter in Apollo.io or LinkedIn Sales Navigator:
- Industry and sub-industry
- Company size (employees and revenue)
- Geography
- Job titles and seniority of the buyer and the influencer
- Triggers: hiring, funding, new tech adoption, expansion
2. Build and verify the list
Export contacts that match your ICP, then verify every email address before sending. We aim for 95%+ deliverable addresses. Remove role-based inboxes (info@, sales@) and anyone already in your CRM pipeline.
3. Protect your sending domain
- Use a secondary domain (for example trygrowteches.com) so your main domain’s reputation is never at risk.
- Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC correctly.
- Warm up new inboxes for 2–3 weeks before campaigns.
- Keep volume to 30–50 emails per inbox per day.
4. Write short, specific emails
The best-performing first emails are under 90 words and follow a simple structure:
- Observation: something specific about their company.
- Problem: a challenge companies like theirs commonly face.
- Proof: one line on a similar result you delivered.
- Ask: a low-friction question, not a 30-minute demo request.
Write to one person, about their business. If the email could be sent to anyone, it will be ignored by everyone.
5. Sequence across channels
A typical sequence runs for three weeks: email on day 1, LinkedIn connection on day 3, follow-up email on day 5, LinkedIn message on day 8, and a final “break-up” email on day 14.
6. Measure what matters
Open rates are increasingly unreliable. Track reply rate, positive reply rate, meetings booked and pipeline created. A healthy campaign typically sees positive replies from a small percentage of contacts — and that is enough to fill a sales calendar.
